The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has a new business digital service. It provides evidence of the existence of intellectual asset. “WIPO PROOF” was launched on May 27th this year and will protect against forgery of all digital files, in any format. The aim is to have proof of the existence of the specific asset at every moment of its development.
About the service
WIPO PROOF is global service, which is easy to use and is also affordable for its customers. It provides evidence, proving a digital file existed at a specific point in time, by using a token and a data- and time-stamped digital fingerprint. This way the intellectual assets are safeguarded from misuse or misappropriation at every stage of their development – from the concept to the final result.
WIPO PROOF is of great importance for trade secret strategies as well as for new creative works. Access to data on the exact time of creation or, respectively, the existence of a file containing information of such importance is an exceptional advantage. In addition, thanks to this service, various scientific or other studies can be stored in a practical way, because all data can be documented in seconds.
How it works?
Anyone can easily access the WIPO PROOF website and request a token for a specific file. WIPO does not have access to the information contained in the file – it does not store it or make a copy of it. The algorithm of the service only interacts with the applicant’s browser and puts a unique digital fingerprint on the file.
WIPO PROOF uses an infrastructure public key to generate these individual tokens. This technology is internationally distributed and proven to be one of the most reliable methods for digital certification.
WIPO Director General Francis Gurry: “In a highly dynamic global economy where value is increasingly based on human activity enabled by digital technologies and big data, it is critical to be able to prove that you were in possession of your intellectual asset’s digital files. WIPO PROOF helps innovators and creators better protect their digital outputs and represents a significant step in expanding WIPO’s suite of services that meet the demands of the digital economy.”
