The US Senate has approved Michelle Lee, the Deputy Director of the United States Patent & Trademark Office and former Deputy General Counsel at Google, as the new Director of the USPTO. In large part because of hostility between Republicans and Democrats in the Senate, the position of Director has been vacant since the resignation of the previous Director, David Kappos, over two years ago. Lee has been Acting Director since that time.
The Regional Director of the Denver branch of the USPTO, Russ Slifer, has been sworn in as Deputy Director. Slifer was head of that branch for a little under a year, and before that was the Chief Patent Counsel for the semiconductor firm Micron Industries
