Bogota, September 27, 2011
In his speech given at the International Seminar LA PROPIEDAD INTELECTUAL EN VARIEDADES VEGETALES Y SU OBSERVANCIA in Bogota, the Secretary General of CIOPORA asked the government of Colombia to push other countries with established or currently developing horticultural industry to comply with international standards on the protection of plant varieties, e.g. to join UPOV and to provide for effective enforcement tools.
Countries like Colombia, which strongly depend on fair conditions in production and trade of ornamental products, have a significant interest in other countries providing for effective IP protection too. Therefore, countries like Colombia are the natural allies of CIOPORA in supporting effective IP protection for plant innovations, and thus ethical production conditions and fair trade worldwide.
