The United States welcomes Paraguay`s improvement for IPR protections and the signing by the President Cartes of the implementing regulation for Law 4798, 2012, that created the National Directorate of Intellectual Property DINAPI. According to the 2014 Special 301 Report the Directorate is the authority in Paraguay in charge of the issuance and protection of copyrights, trademarks, patents, industrial designs, and geographical indications.
The United States highlights also the possibility of an Out-of-Cycle Review and removing Paraguay from the 2014 Watch List in case of achievement of a settlement on the IPR Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries in 2014. This decision is a result of the positive steps that Paraguay has undertaken in IPR protection and enforcement such as border operations and US pharmaceutical patents granting.
