Internationalized domain names (“IDNs”) now allow businesses and individuals to register country-specific domains in non-Latin characters. These IDNs are intended to create a more globally inclusive Internet and to allow brand owners to market goods and services more effectively to potential customers. Unfortunately, they may also create new opportunities for cybersquatters to abuse brand names through infringing domain name registrations.
Many countries in the Middle East region have already opened their doors to domain extensions in Arabic, specifically Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Palestinian Territory, and the UAE. Several other jurisdictions plan to follow suit. Please note that the laws and timeframes for registrations vary from country to country. For instance, some countries offer different registration periods based on priority of trademark registration while others are publicly available. Therefore, trademark owners with commercial interests in the Middle East region should take this opportunity to ensure that their marks are adequately protected in both Latin-characters and the equivalent Arabic translation and/or transliteration.
